Do you have dead spots in your home where you get no Wifi signal?

I am sure many of us do!

In my case, we moved into our home a few months back.

Our cable modem and router are upstairs, and the Wifi signal is terribly weak in our bedroom downstairs.

When I use my cell phone in our bedroom downstairs, it uses 4G LTE data rather than connecting to the home Wifi network.

Why would anyone want to burn 4G LTE data when sitting at home? This drove me nuts!

I wanted to put an end to this nonsense and started looking for Wifi range extenders.

Within thirty minutes of searching and researching, I located what I wanted to buy – the Netgear N300 Wifi Extender.

Netgear N300 Wifi Extender

Setting up the Netgear N300 Wifi Extender is done in three simple steps:

#1 The initial power on and set up of the Netgear N300 Wifi Extender must be done in close proximity to your primary home Wifi router.

This is to ensure that your extender connects with your Wifi router.

#2 Once set up is complete, you unplug and move the Wifi Extender to a midway location between your primary Wifi router and the dead spot.

The location you choose must have a decent Wifi signal from your primary Wifi router.

#3 Finally use your cell phone or laptop to check if you have full coverage at your dead spot.

If you can follow simple instructions that come as part of the Netgear install guide, then you should be able to set it up in less than 15 minutes.

Stretch A Dime Hacks

#1 If your home network’s SSID is NETWORK, then the default SSID the Wifi Extender will set up is NETWORK_EXT. You can rename the Extender SSID to anything you want.

I just named it the same as my home network’s SSID – no “_EXT”.

It works!

#2 Normally, you can go to the mywifiext.net to access your Wifi Extender’s configuration / settings.

If you make the extender’s SSID same as your home network’s SSID, you can still visit the mywifiext.net page – you need to have a direct Ethernet cable connection from your laptop to the N300 extender once the SSID of your Wifi extender is the same as your home network’s SSID.

If you don’t have a direct wire connection, you won’t be able to get to the mywifitext.net configuration page.

#3 After the set up is complete, the extender’s configuration page menu shows options for installing the latest firmware.

I always like to ensure that I am using the latest version of firmware available.

So, I clicked the firmware update button – it downloaded the latest image through the internet, installed it, and the extender rebooted and was running like a charm.

Conclusion

It took me about 15 minutes to complete the set up and upgrading the firmware.

I was in exuberance once I had it working.

My bedroom went from “zero” signal strength to full Wifi strength and my cell phone no longer switches to using the 4G LTE data.

I ‘m a happy man! Sarah is a happy camper too! It was $30 well spent!

Do you have dead Wifi spots at home? How did you address the problem? If you are looking for a solution, give Netgear N300 Wifi Extender a try. I am pretty sure you would be a glad you did!
