Drug Store Bargains

I ‘m guilty of this tunnel vision – “Everything is cheaper at supermarkets like Walmart, Target, or your local grocery store. Drug stores like Walgreens and Drugstore.com are expensive places to shop at.” That was my belief but that ain’t the truth. The truth is there is a nice list of things you could buy at a drug store at a steep discount compared to a supermarket like Walmart or Target.

Here are a few things you must know about Drug Stores:

#1 Run specials all the time (20+% discount).

#2 Offer free shipping on orders typically greater than $25 – $35 (depending on the season).

#3 Frequent Buy One Get One (BOGO) FREE offers.

#4 Issue PROMOTION CODEs that help you save even more.

#5 Offer loyalty reward dollars or points and discounts that can be used on your next purchase.

If you combine these four, you have stretched your dime a long way.

For example, I take supplements on a daily basis –  Nature Made Ultra Omega-3 Fish Oil (Price at Target = $13.78 at the time of this writing). Now look at the chart below to see how much I saved:

In case of Walgreens, I only paid for 3 boxes (15.99 x 3 = $47.97, since I got a BOGO promotion). I combined the Walgreens’ BOGO, promotion code, and free shipping and purchased 9 months worth of my dietary supplement and saved $36.77. Instead of spending ~$83 at Target, I spent ~$46 at Walgreens, and saved ~$37.

Here are a few things you can do to start saving money:

#1 Have your list of planned purchases ready.

#2 Sign up for a free online account with Drugstore.com, Walgreens, or your favorite drug store and get on their email distribution. You will start receiving coupons, BOGO offers, and special promotions via email periodically.

  1. Hi Michael,
I agree it does matter where you are shopping,
but for some reason, we’ll choose the convenient way 90% of the times 🙂
    Thank you for sharing!

    1. Hi Emi,

Yes, that too. In this case, it is bad a assumption to make that a big grocery chain will always have the best price.
