Goal for 2017

“A goal is a dream with a deadline.” – Napoleon Hill

The movie Tracks, is a true story of Robyn Davidson, a young woman from the city, who decides to walk ~2000 miles across the Australian desert with four camels and her dog. She has no money, no camels, and no resources to pursue the journey.

What she has –  a burning desire!

She is passionate and madly dedicated to her pursuit. People think she is out of her mind.

When people ask, “Why? Why would you want to do such a thing? You could die and it is risky!”, Robyn’s response is something along the lines of “Why not? I just want to prove that an ordinary person can do extraordinary things.”

She has no knowledge of camels and has no money. What she has – a burning desire, willingness to learn, and a relentless dedication to her dream! You can’t get her to give up.

She is disciplined, she is honest, she is madly passionate, and she just won’t quit!

Did she actually walk the distance? Did she survive? Watch the movie. The movie is available of Netflix. It is terrific, very inspirational, and I strongly recommend it.

A Thing About Dreams

If you have a dream, and if you already know how to accomplish it, it is no dream at all.

It ain’t big enough.

Your dream must make people think you are crazy!

For example, I have a real crazy dream. If I told you, you would laugh about it.

I took that dream, made it my goal, put some ~40 baby steps (mini goals to reach the final goal) along the way to get there.

All I know is I am taking one step at a time towards it. I just keep focusing on the immediate mini goal and keep going.

I am on my fifth year (~aka 5th step) in pursuit of my dream.

Always remember – Your greatest weakness almost always works against your greatest dream – What is your Delilah?

Goals for 2017

While it is great to have one life size dream that you are passionate about, it is also good to have tangible goals in every area of your life.

Every year, I would write my goals in a rush and pretty much focus on just two or three of them and ignore the rest. This year I took a long time to ponder and write the goals down and I was very intentional about it.

I am sharing some of them here.

Some of these goals are easy for me to achieve while some of them I stumble on every year. This year, I am going to auto-pilot things that I have already mastered. I am going to focus and micro-manage things that I stumble on.

For example, attending church would be an “auto-pilot” activity and I am going to be micro managing myself reading through the new testament.

  • Attend church every Sunday, unless I am travelling or on a vacation.
  • Read the new testament

Sarah and I both love what we do for a living. With our busy work schedules, taking kids for activities, we often don’t get enough time to spend with each other.

This year we both wrote down the same goal that we should go out on planned dates. It is working out thus far. The parent-daughter dates is something new that we are going to be working on this year as well.

  • Dates with Sarah
  • Dad-Daughter & Mom-Daughter Dates
  • Family Vacation (1 week)

We are planning to go an a nice family vacation this summer. The vacation destination is still to be determined. Your suggestions are welcome 🙂

I recently watched a documentary – Fork Over Knives. It is a documentary on how our diet affects our health.

It was very eye opening for me. I recommend you to watch it and form your own opinion.

In my case, I am slowly making lifestyle and dietary changes.

I am introducing changes slowly, so that they become a habit and last.

  • Reach normal cholesterol levels
  • Lose ~12 pounds and reach ~190 lbs.

I an a tall dude. So, I would be a happy camper when I reach my target weight goal. This is another area where I need to micro mange progress, adjust my diet and exercise along the away.

I am thankful for where I am in my career. My goal is to continue to be an excellent employee and reach my annual targeted savings goal for the year. This will be mostly in auto-pilot mode.

  • Reach targeted annual savings
  • Investment Project

For lack of better terms, I am working on an investment project. This is something where I have been micro managing my work and will write more about it when the right time comes.

I believe in becoming a better version of me today than I was yesterday. I love to learn, it invigorates me. This is an area where I get scatter brained very easily. When I start something, I am going to micro manage and hold myself accountable and ensure that I complete what I started.

  • Complete two courses on Coursera (my choice)
  • Read 6 books (my choice – fiction / non-fiction)
  • Complete reading / working Word Power Made Easy and improve my vocabulary.

Right now, I have taken a HTML, CSS, Javascript course on Coursera. My goal is to complete it before the end of February.

I have started reading a  murder investigation novel by John Sandford – Eyes of Prey.

It takes time, thought, and effort to maintain any meaningful relationship.

I am making it is my goal to

  • Stay engaged with my current circle of friends (meet at least once a month)
  • Connect with 5 personal finance bloggers and get to know them.

I put down all my goals in an Excel spreadsheet to track overall progress. I am using Evernote to write down my daily to do lists that are in alignment with my goals – this help me stay on course through the day.

I will continue to keep you posted as I make progress towards my goals through the year.

Your time is precious! Don’t let 2017 pass by. Make the best of it. Set your goals and be passionate and intentional about them.

Carpe Diem! Seize the day. What are you waiting for? Have you set your goals for 2017? Are you pursuing a crazy big dream?

  1. I love your goals!!! I think the two biggest goals that I have for 2017 are to go to the gym 4x a week and to find a new job for 2017. So far I’ve been able to go 4x a week since December and have been interviewing. So hopefully I hear something soon. Thanks for sharing your list of goals!!!

    1. You are welcome, MSM! Those are awesome goals to pursue and I am glad to see that you are staying focused on them. Wish you all the very best in your career.

  2. Awesome goals, Michael! I especially love your spiritual and physical goals. I’m working on physical goals too (currently eating whole foods only and juicing) and am always working on increasing the time I spend in the blessed Word of God. Best investment ever. 🙂 Good luck, Michael – I know you’ll achieve everything you set out to!

    1. Thank you, Laurie! Yep, spending time on the Word and in prayer is the best investment ever.

Wish you good luck on your physical goals too.

  3. These are some really solid goals! I’ve already done poorly on this one -> “Attend church every Sunday, unless I am travelling or on a vacation.” Granted our church downtown Minneapolis has had issues securing parking on a couple of Sundays, but I feel like that’s just an excuse! I could get there earlier and find parking earlier and be on Church on time.

    1. Hi DC,

Thank you. Believe me, I have my own struggles.

You have done a great thing by acknowledging that there is room for improvement. I would encourage you to make it your goal to be on time. I am sure if make it a priority, you certainly would achieve the goal.

  4. Terrific goals, Michael. I know Jon and I need to make social time with each other more of a priority…we both spend plenty of time with our daughter (together and separately) but not nearly enough with each other that isn’t just being in the same house or running errands. Couples need to play together, too.

    1. Thank you, Emily! It is a challenge – kids take a lot of our time too 🙂

That is why we are consciously making it a priority to spend time with each other more this year.

  5. Good luck with your goals, Michael! Thanks for sharing. It sounds like you’re working on improving a number of great skills. I’m also working on my health in 2017. I’m currently trying to go to the gym at least 3 days per week. That alone causes me to eat healthier. I’m definitely working on financial goals too. I actually have a new post in the works regarding financial goals for 2017. My other area of focus this year is the blog. Have a great week!

    1. Thank you, Graham. Nice to hear that you have health as a priority in 2017. I ‘m looking forward to see what you have in terms of goals for this year. You have a great week too!
