Ultra Cheap Prescription Glasses

I usually get my eyes checked every year and get a new pair of glasses.  I would go to a place like Lens Crafters. After selecting the frame and lens, I would end up having to pay about ~$200 out of pocket even with insurance coverage.

One day I was talking to a friend of mine and he referred me to the Zenni Optical website and asked me to check it out.  They have nice collection of frames and they are “Ultra Cheap”, so I decided to give them a try.

There are two things you need to have in hand before you can order prescription glasses online:

  • Prescription (the obvious)
  • Pupil Distance (PD)

When you go to an optometrist, you will receive a prescription for your glasses. That is the obvious part.  You also need to know your pupil distance (PD).  This is not something an optometrist would volunteer, but if you ask, they normally write it down for you.  Sometimes, they might not give this information because they prefer that you buy your glasses from them.

Even if the optometrist doesn’t give your PD information, don’t worry, it is easy to get it Okay, what is pupil distance (PD)? As the name implies, it is basically the distance between the pupils of your eyes.  All you need is a millimeter ruler to measure your PD.  Here is a video that shows how to measure PD –  How To Measure Pupil Distance.  Here is the link to the PD Ruler for your convenience.

Now that you have your prescription and PD, you are ready to order your glasses online now. In my case, I ordered my glasses (frame and lens) for ~$25 (including shipping) from ZenniOptical and I received it within 5-7 business days.  I love it and it works great for me.  I saved a whopping ~$200 by getting my glasses from Zenni Optical. Even if you a primary pair of glasses, you could consider Zenni Optical for a back pair of glasses.
